We've been focusing on the area of literacy. For us, literacy can mean beginning at the very beginning with a student who has interrupted formal education helping them learn how to read. Then other students know how to read but may be many years behind grade level, so we have a large gap to close while they're trying to earn graduation credits and graduate in a quick four years.

On the Literacy page, I found the excerpts from Cris Tovani's book, I Read It, But I Don't Get It. I made a connection with her idea about "word callers." Some of our ELLs are very good at saying the words, but they really don't understand what they mean, particularly on a deeper level of understanding.
